January David Carney and Tracey FieldingĪ terminally ill dad and grandad was kicked to death in the hallway of his Fleetwood flat after his vengeful ex “set the wheels in motion”. He then texted his partner, telling her, “I’ve done what you asked.” Raymond Cullen known locally as ‘Irish Ray’, suffered horrific head injuries after being set upon by David Carney in the early hours of October 10, 2019, a court heard.įollowing the attack, Carney poured paint over Mr Cullen’s body in a further act of contempt for his victim. Preston Crown Court heard Mr Cullen, 55, had been in a three year relationship with Tracey Fielding, 46, which had ended the previous year. The relationship was described as “tempestuous and corrosive” with allegations of domestic violence on both sides.Īt least four witnesses described Fielding offering people up to £20,000 to attack or kill her ex, with one woman saying: “From the moment I met Tracey I have known her asking people to kill Ray.”īut Fielding’s threats were never taken seriously as she was drunk and did not have the money she was offering. In August 2019, Mr Cullen spent a period of time in hospital receiving treatment of cirrhosis of the liver.

Mr Cullen was so concerned for his safety he went to stay at a hotel for two weeks when he was discharged from hospital.īut he returned to his flat in Bold Street, where he was murdered just a few weeks later. In the early hours of October 10, Mr Cullen was woken by Carney, who launched a vicious attack, kicking and stamping on the frail grandfather’s head. He suffered fractures to his nose and eye socket, a bleed on the brain and a gash to his head which bled extensively. Mr Cullen’s body was discovered by a friend who knew he had been in hospital and called by for a visit. The flat smelled of bleach and attempts had been made to clean the scene.

However a footprint left in the paint matched Carney’s Timberland boot, and Carney’s fingerprints were found on a paint tin and at the scene.Ĭarney, 38, initially denied having any contact with Mr Cullen but later pleaded guilty to his murder. The Honorary Recorder of Preston Judge Robert Altham, sentencing, said: “Mr Cullen was a vulnerable man both in condition and circumstances. “He suffered cirrhosis of the liver and was described by his daughter as frail and weak.
